Trip to Kaunas (from Vilnius)
This trip is a perfect chance to get to know the second largest Lithuanian city. Kaunas is proud for its small but unique Old Town, home to many architectural sights from various periods. The oldest historical monument in the city – remains of Kaunas’ First Castle, dating back to 14th century. Along with this site, you will stumble upon buildings from Mature Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque époques. The City Hall of Kaunas is a beautiful mix of elements dating back to all these periods due to numerous reconstructions it has undergone. The sights of Kaunas New Town is equally interesting, giving you a hint about the life in times of Kaunas Guberniya. This period is represented by the buildings nearby the Laisvės Alley and the remains of late 19th-early 20th century fortification sights No. 6, 7 and 9 on the outskirts of Kaunas.
Pažaislis Monastery complex near Kaunas – one of the most beautiful architectural sights in Kaunas and the whole country. It fascinates the visitors by its unique Baroque architecture and spiritual feeling. In the 17th century, as the monastery was being built, the most famous Italian architects, painters and sculpture artists were working in this exact place, in the middle of Lithuanian forests. 1919-1940, the years of Kaunas being the temporary capital of Lithuania changed the city a lot – number of modern buildings (mostly of functionalist and rationalist schools) was built in the central part of Kaunas. The city is so full of historic and architectural sights that sometimes a time limit makes it a difficult task to plan your route around without missing something out.
We have designed an optimal itinerary and ensure that you will visit the most interesting sights of Kaunas and learn about the history of the city and country as a whole. You will get to know Kaunas’ Old Town and New Town (taking a walk in Laisvės Alley in the process). In addition, you will have an option to visit Pažaislis Monastery or 9th/7th fortification sight and any Kaunas museum of your choice.
You will see and learn about: Kaunas Castle, St. George Church and Bernadine monastery, Bernadine nuns’ monastery, Post station, dating back to XIX century, old market square (now – City Hall square), City Hall, Vytautas the Great Church, House of Thunder and St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral Basilica, Alley of Liberty, Monument for Grand Duke Vytautas, Central Bank and the Unity Square, buildings in modernism style. Visit to Pažaislis Monastery complex or 9th fortification sight, M. K. Čiurlionis Art Gallery or another museum of choice and Aleksotas scenic lookout.
When: everyday (Pažaislis Monastery is closed to visitors on Sundays and Mondays, on these days you can visit 9th or 7th fortification sight instead). Departure around 10am.
